The PS1Try Project is an attempt to play and catalog every game for the Sony Playstation that I can get my hands on. Every game. Unreleased games, educational games only distributed to schools, demo discs, all of ’em! I’m playing them in a mostly random order, selecting dockets of 10 games at a time, and then choosing from them as my mood dictates.
The catch is that I only get one shot at a game. Once I lose, it’s all over. What counts as a loss for a game depends on the game. My general rule of thumb so far has been “no repeating content” (with some exceptions). If I lose a life in a platformer, a match in a football game, or a round in a fighting game, it’s onto the next game. RPGs require a party wipe and a game over screen. Games with no way to lose or die, like most adventure games, must be completed (or forfeited if I really really hate it). It’s all kinda wishy-washy, and I’m considering refining things, and possibly adding some sort of redemption mechanic to allow me to revisit failures. Recently I’ve switched to seeing a “Game Over” screen on games that feature them being failure, due to platformers that last 2 minutes not being fun for me or anyone watching.
I stream these attempts almost every midnight (central USA) on Twitch, and VODs of all those streams are put onto YouTube. There’s a Twitter account, Facebook page, and Discord server too. It’s all good fun.
There is a small backlog of games on the backburner, postponed from the docket for issues either technical or because they’re visual novels in Japanese and me jamming X all the way through isn’t interesting, so I’m working on a way to make those fun. Here is that list:
- Goofy’s Fun House
- Digimon World 2 (Japanese)
- Music 2000
- Gensou Suiko Gaiden 1 – Harmonia no Kenshi
- Yarudora Series: Volume 1: Double Cast
- Simple 1500 Series Vol. 36 – The Renai Simulation – Natsu Iro Celebration
- Gensou Suiko Gaiden Vol. 2 – Crystal Valley no Kettou
- NOeL – Not Digital
- Yuukyuu Gensoukyoku – Ensemble 2
